Inktober is a month long art challenge that takes place every October for artists to come together on social media. It was created by an artist named Jake Parker and the challenge is focused on improving art skills and developing positive drawing habits. Every day for the month of October anyone participating in the Inktober challenge creates an ink drawing and posts it online based on the prompt given at the beginning of the month.
Art is something I have always wanted to be good at, but never really applied myself to. So this year, I challenged myself to take part in Inktober. My biggest challenges in art are “artist’s block” where I go blank and cannot think of anything to draw, but since Inktober gives me prompts, I thought it could be helpful to try and it would give me a community of other artists in the time as well. This is my first week’s attempt at Inktober:
Day One: Fish
Koi fish have always been special to me. They are just calm and make me feel free; I drew the koi fish surrounding the yin-yang sign because the fish created a circle between themselves. My art inspiration was from Society6.com.
Day Two: Wisp
I had trouble thinking of what to draw for this one…but ultimately I decided on drawing a fairy because I feel that they are very delicate and wispy by air.
Day Three: Bulky
When I think of bulky, I think of getting cuddled up in warm clothing by a fireplace on a cold day. So that is exactly what I drew. This picture is one of my favorite’s from the week so far because it has a very calming/chill effect and was the most fun to draw.
Day Four: Radio
I immediately thought of the song “Video Killed the Radio Star” when I heard day four’s prompt. This eery, yet pun-intended drawing was by far my most creative drawing I have ever made. My reference was the artist Zombik, who was featured on Redbubble.
Day Five: Blade
This drawing was inspired by the traditional Iranian flag. My family lived in Iran for generations, until the Islamic Republic came into place, so this lion (captured on the previous flag) is very important to my family and I. To us, it is a symbol of freedom and tradition to our culture. The blade represents the strength of what our former country had.
Day Six: Rodent
When I first heard the prompt “rodent” I couldn’t imagine what I would draw. I am not really interested in drawing a gross, rabies-infested rat. After a while of brainstorming, I came up with this much cuter version of a rodent decorating for Halloween. Perhaps he will go trick-or-treating for cheese this year.
Day Seven: Fancy
After recently rewatching the movie: “The Nightmare Before Christmas” I felt like I just had to incorporate Mr. Jack Skellington in here somewhere. Jack Skellington is fancy because he is the “Pumpkin King” and gets to wear a suit around everywhere! He is also the only character in the movie with their own pet (remember Zero?). This drawing concludes my week of Inktober and I cannot wait to see where the rest of this month takes me as an artist.
