News Brief: Robert Downey Jr. will not be nominated for an Oscar by Disney

This past week, Disney announced their “Avengers: Endgame” nominations for the 2019 Oscars. Nominations included Best Director and Best Picture. However, Disney’s nominations list did not include Robert Downey Jr., who plays Iron Man in the Avengers film series, for Best Actor.

Many people do not agree with this decision. Fans started a petition to get Downey’s name on the nominations list, stating that he deserves recognition for his performance.

While on the “Howard Stern Show” on Oct. 7, Downey said, “I’m so glad you brought this up because there was some talk about it, and I said ‘let’s not’ and because I’m much more like you than you might really want to believe.” Downey made it a point to steer his name clear of an Oscar nomination for his portrayal as Iron Man.

Redlands East Valley sophomore, Genevieve Wolbert, said, “I think especially after his performances in ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame,’ he is more than deserving. He added so much emotion to the scene, it had all of the audience in tears.”
